Robern Story

With four generations in family business, Robern has over a century's experience in dried fruit processing. In fact it would be fair to say nobody knows fruit processing like Robern, it’s a skill and art form that has been handed down from generation to generation, honed and perfected! Thus it’s no surprise that Robern is synonymous with quality! We don’t cut corners and work tirelessly to ensure we source the finest, high quality fruit from Australia and around the world. Today, under the Robern brand, we strive to produce and market high quality fruit based products comprising of our popular Delightfuls range - featuring our Apricot Coconut Balls and Apricot Indulgence - proudly enjoyed across Australia.

Menz Story

Menz Confectionery is one of our proudest brands; it’s stood the test of time since 1850 and still to this day, consistently delivers quality products at affordable prices. Few companies survive without innovation and development, but staying true to our values and only using the finest ingredients has been a key player in our success. Take for example Menz products; FruChocs (first produced in 1948) and Crown Mints (first produced in1892) - two iconic products which are loved and enjoyed as much today as the day they were first released onto the market.

The Menz range used to centre around two famous SA products; Menz FruChocs and Menz Crown Mints. Menz FruChocs are succulent Apricot and Peach centres coated in delicious milk chocolate, while Menz Crown Mints are crisp mints that come in peppermint and spearmint flavours. However, Menz Bumbles Choc Honeycomb, ranged nationally in Coles and Woolworths, is fast becoming Australia's favourite! In addition to these products Menz also produces high quality Jelly confectionery products, along with a great range of chocolate covered products, including Menz JeliChocs, Menz Classic Fruit and Nuts range and the highly popular Menz Choccy Snakes.

Menz Confectionery Today

Menz Confectionery has 150 years of tradition and is a family business spanning over four generations. Led today by brothers Phil Sims and Richard Sims, Menz Confectionery is the parent company to its two famous brand ranges Robern and Menz.

Today Menz Confectionery employs over 110 staff. With three retail outlets in South Australia – Glynde, Hahndorf, McLaren Vale and Tanunda, and distribution throughout all major retailers, Menz Confectionery is the largest manufacturer of Choc Honeycomb in Australia and produces such products as the iconic FruChocs and Crown Mints. Additionally, Menz Confectionery is the now proud owner of Australia's Violet Crumble, which is ranged nationally and exported all over the globe!

Our modern export accredited food production facilities and high tech equipment enables Menz Confectionery to process some of the most appetising products on the Australian and international markets today.


1850 – Johan and Magdelena Menz began grocery and baking business, W Menz & Co, in Wakefield Street, Adelaide. Iconic biscuit, Yo Yo’s soon becomes a household favourite
1892 – New equipment was installed to produce confectionery, in particular the peppermint lozenge, today known as the Menz Crown Mint
1908 - Walter Sims opens the first of his four grocery stores in North Unley
1926 – Walter Sims buys a factory in Irymple, near Mildura to ensure reliable supply of dried fruit. The Robern name was born – a hybrid name dedicated to the memory of friend Robert Burnell
1934 – Walter Sims became the first grocery retailer to join the Serv-Wel co-operative chain of stores
1940 – Edgar Sims expands the manufacturing business to include dried, canned and frozen fruit and dehydrated vegetables in 6 factories – Loxton, Irymple, Angaston, Mile End, Hectorville and North Unley
1948 – Menz creates choc-coated fruit treat, Menz FruChocs
1964 – Menz joins other biscuit manufacturers to form Arnott-Motteram-Menz
1970 – Grantley W Sims introduces mechanised production to compete with overseas suppliers
1978 – Robern enters confectionery market buying Tandy Lifesavers
1985 – Robern buys a honeycomb plant from Hoadleys and sets up a manufacturing plant in Stepney, South Australia.
1992 – US company Campbell Soup Company takes over Arnotts Biscuits and Robern purchases Menz Confectionery. Business changes name to Robern Menz
1995 – Robern Menz purchases the former Glover-Gibbs pie factory and re-locates all its fruit and confectionery manufacturing to Glynburn Road, Glynde
2003 – The FruChocs Shop at McLaren Vale is officially opened.
2005 – ‘Menz FruChocs’ become an official ‘Icon of South Australia’ by the National Trust
2008 – Robern Menz celebrates 100 years of (Sims) family business ownership
2012 – The FruChocs Shop at Hahndorf is officially opened.
2013 – Robern Menz is inducted in to the Food South Australia Hall of Fame & wins the inaugural Consumer Choice Award.
2015 – Robern Menz again wins the Consumer Choice Award (as voted by the public) at the South Australian Food Industry Awards.
2017 – Robern Menz again wins the Consumer Choice Award (as voted by the public) at the South Australian Food Industry Awards for the third time.
2018 – Robern Menz buys iconic Australian brand 'Violet Crumble' from Swiss owned Nestle.   
2019 - Robern Menz buys iconic Australian brand ‘Polly Waffle' from Swiss owned Nestle.   
2020 - Robern Menz again wins the Consumer Choice Award (as voted by the public) at the South Australian Premier’s Food Awards for the fourth time.
2021 - Robern Menz again wins the Business Excellence Award for businesses with over 15FTE at the South Australian Premier’s Food Awards
2021 - Robern Menz changes it's name to Menz Confectionery
2021 - Menz Confectionery opens new flagship store, The FruChocs Shop, in Tanunda (Barossa Valley).
